April 1, 2010: UncleBear Media has signed author, dream weaver, visionary, plus actor Garth Marenghi to write a roleplaying game based on his controversial and internationally popular television series, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.

“I’ve never played a roleplaying game, or rollen geisten as they’re known in Germany,” Marenghi is quoted as saying. “But I’ve spent time aplenty in my parents’ basement, so I’m sure I can channel those experiences into something the nerds can relate to. I’ve written over 400 novels, a fraction of which have been bestsellers. I’ve written, directed, produced and starred in my own television show. Crafting a little game should be a piece of cake for a man of my not inconsiderable talents. It’s probably beneath me, frankly, but I’m the kind of guy that feels the need to give back to the community.”

“There was one time we went to a science fiction, or ‘sci-fi’ convention to promote Garth’s latest book at the time,” said Dean Lerner, Marenghi’s publisher.  “It was a thriller called Drywall about a man who seals himself into the walls of his own home. I nearly **** my pants at that one. Anyway, there’s a kid walks up and is dressed like Garth, he was playacting at being Garth. I slapped him. It was just disrespectful. The little bugger ran off to tell his mother, but I’d slap him again. Bloody disrespectful.”

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is a supernatural drama set in a hospital. It was filmed in the 1980s but never aired due to its extreme and disturbing content. It was finally aired in 2004 due to a writer’s strike and an urgent need for any sort of programming to fill time. It currently runs in the United States in the highly coveted 3 a.m. time slot on the Adult Swim channel. The complete series will be available on DVD this fall via Amazon.co.uk.

Players in the game will get to play lead character Dr. Rick Dagless, a brilliant surgeon/occult dabbler portrayed by Marenghi in the series, as well as shotgun-toting hospital administrator Thornton Reed and Dagless’s best friend, Dr. Lucien Sanchez. According to Merenghi, there will be no game statistics for Dr. Liz Asher, or rules of any kind for female player characters. “Be kind of pointless, wouldn’t it?” Marenghi is alleged to have stated. “If you’ve got a chance to play a man’s man, who would want to play a woman?”
