Hank – Because the SKETCH system was designed for one-shot games it was not really designed for long-term character advancement.
One idea I had was having the players choose one or more specific specialisation skills at character creation as they played – such as Pistol, Horse riding or Astronomy – and they can put Experience Points into those skills only. They get one Experience Point or more at the end of every adventure and to raise a specialisation skill level by one point costs the current skill level in Experience Points – so to get from skill level 5 to 6 would cost 5 Experience Points – which would make advancement slow but possible. Specialiasation skills could then go above level 6 so that they can counteract those pesky difficulty modifiers, although rolling 6 would still be an automatic failure and 1 a success as per the normal rules.

At the moment there’s a ‘Rewards’ and ‘Fate Dice’ system, as detailed in ‘The 13th Year’ on the same webpage as the Blade Runner game, which gives characters reason to push on in the game, but maybe a proper experience system would be a good idea.
