Anyone can publish anything these days, easily. That part is easy.

Saying something new is hard.

Making anything resembling money is nigh impossible.

This is a welcome reality check for those of us who don't believe this will be hard work. People need their reasons to do it - and how they get there seems to vary between joining the industry or blazing their own trail.

It's never been easier to publish your own stuff and get it out there.

The hard part appears to be saying something new... :)

I feel you, my friend. I'm right there with you. You've seen my game; you know that I basically opted out of 'marketable' with it. I currently reserve my fantasy of writing rpg stuff full time as an add-on to the 'winning the lottery' fantasy.

You're squishing my dreams, man. But maybe in a good way.

I got to work for years doing what I love and it made me hate what I love. Now I just do what I like and save what I love for my spare time. I still dream of making money from all that spare time though. Maybe it's a question of managing your expectations: if your job takes care of your living then if you make any money at all from your hobbies it's gravy. And there's still that long tail...

Oh man, did you ever nail my thoughts on turning my hobby(ies) into a career. Though I may be luckier than most hobbyists thinking about turning pro, because I actually love my "day" job. I'm not implying that you don't; I just find many that wish to break into the industry are dissatisfied with their current job.

At one time, I wanted to become a professional game programmer, which I might have actually had a decent chance of doing, but then I saw how a studio operated. Guys spending 70-80 hours a week busting their ass for what I considered nomimal compensation (and no overtime). I can only imagine that "little compensation" and "job security" are both issues in the RPG Publishing Industry.

Today, I am extremely satisfied with my career choice and it leaves me enough time to spend with my family AND have fun with my hobbies. Which makes me appreciate the ones in trenches doing it for a living even more.
